A 12 in LP in its sleeve is about 12 ⅜ in (31.5 cm) square, and outer sleeves add a little. Any box that will hold records needs an inside width and height of at least 12 ¾ in (32.5 cm). Most "record crates" are built to that number; most ordinary storage boxes are not.
Sizes and counts
- Records stand on edge. A box 13 in (33 cm) deep holds roughly 50 LPs; 16 in (40 cm) holds about 65; a full 24 in (60 cm) crate holds 100 and weighs over 40 lb (18 kg) when full.
- 7 in singles need 7 ¾ in (20 cm) inside; 10 in records need 10 ¾ in (27 cm).
- Stackable crates with an open front let you flip through records without unstacking. Lidded boxes keep dust out and are better for storage.
KALLAX and records
The IKEA KALLAX cube is the most popular record shelf for a reason: the 13 × 13 in opening fits LPs with a little room, and a compartment holds 50 to 60. Any box that fits KALLAX, on the KALLAX page, will also hold records if it is at least 12 ¾ in inside.
