A shoe box is the one storage box everyone already knows the size of, and yet stackable shoe boxes come in at least four sizes. Buy the wrong one and either the shoes do not fit or the boxes waste half the shelf.
Sizes by shoe type
- Women's flats and sneakers up to size 9: a box about 12 × 8 × 4 in (30 × 20 × 10 cm) is enough.
- Men's sneakers up to size 12 and chunky trainers: 13 ½ × 9 ½ × 5 in (34 × 24 × 13 cm) or larger. Most "large" clear shoe boxes are this size.
- Heels and ankle boots: the heel adds height. Look for 6 in (15 cm) or more, or store them on their side.
- Tall boots: a shoe box will not do it; search for boxes at least 16 in (40 cm) long.
Drop-front or lid
Drop-front boxes open at the front so you can pull one pair from the middle of a stack. Lidded boxes are cheaper and stack higher but you have to unstack to reach the bottom one. Fabric boxes with a window are lighter and better for shoes you rarely wear.
