Fridge shelves are deep and short: about 16 to 18 in (40 to 46 cm) from front to back in a standard refrigerator, and only 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) between shelves unless you move them. A bin that fits the shelf is therefore long, narrow and low, which is not the shape of most storage bins.
Measure the shelf
- Depth: front edge to back wall, minus about half an inch for the door bins when the door is closed.
- Height: shelf to the underside of the shelf above. Remember that lids add height.
- Width: decide how many bins you want side by side. 4 in (10 cm) bins hold cans in a row; 6 in (15 cm) holds yoghurt and jars; 8 in (20 cm) suits produce.
French-door and side-by-side fridges have narrower shelves, often 12 to 14 in (30 to 36 cm) deep, and the freezer drawers are a different size again.
Materials
Clear plastic is the only sensible choice in a fridge: you can see what is inside, it wipes clean and it takes the cold. Look for bins with handles at the front so you can pull them out with one hand. Bins with lids stack; open bins are easier to reach into.
