The cabinet under a kitchen sink looks big: 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) wide and 22 in (56 cm) deep. Then you open the door and find the drain, the trap, the shut-off valves and a garbage disposal in the middle of it. The usable space is two narrow slots either side of the plumbing, and a strip at the front.
Measure the slots
Measure from the cabinet wall to the nearest pipe, on each side, at the height where a bin would sit. Typical results are 8 to 14 in (20 to 35 cm) on each side. Then measure the height from the cabinet floor to the underside of the sink or disposal: usually 12 to 20 in (30 to 50 cm), less under the disposal.
Bathroom vanities are smaller: 18 to 30 in wide and 18 in deep, with the same pipe in the middle.
What fits
- Slim bins, 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) wide and 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm) deep, slide into the slots beside the pipes.
- Pull-out drawers on runners use the depth fully; check the width against your slot.
- Two-tier expandable shelves straddle the pipe and hold bins on top.
- Stackable bins work where there is height, usually the side away from the disposal.
