Photo storage boxes for 4 × 6 prints

Standard prints are 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm), and a photo box needs a little more than that inside: 4 ¼ × 6 ¼ in so the prints slide in without curling, and enough height to hold a few hundred of them upright. That gives an outer size of roughly 7 × 5 × 4 in (18 × 12 × 10 cm) for a single box, or 11 × 8 × 5 in (28 × 20 × 12 cm) for the double-width "keepsake" size.

What to check

• Inside length: at least 6 ¼ in (16 cm), or 4 × 6 prints will not lie flat.
• Height: 4 in (10 cm) fits prints standing on their short edge with room for tabbed dividers.
• Acid-free or archival paper matters for photos older than a few decades. Plastic is fine for modern prints and keeps moisture out.
• Many photo boxes are sold in sets of six or twelve that stack in a larger case; check the outer case size if you have a shelf in mind.

For 5 × 7 prints, widen the length slider to 8 in (20 cm). For 8 × 10, search for document boxes instead.
