KALLAX is the most common cube shelf in the world, and the reason so many boxes are sold as "13 × 13". Each compartment is 13 × 13 in (33 × 33 cm) at the opening and 15 in (39 cm) deep. Anything smaller than that fits; the question is how much of the space you want to fill.
The numbers
- Opening: 13 × 13 in (33 × 33 cm). A box up to 12 ¾ in wide and high slides in and out comfortably.
- Depth: 15 in (39 cm). Boxes between 13 and 15 in deep sit flush with the front; shorter boxes leave a gap at the back, which is fine for things you reach for often.
- The same dimensions apply to the older EXPEDIT shelf and to most 13 in cube organizers from other brands.
IKEA's own inserts versus everyone else's
IKEA sells DRÖNA fabric boxes, KALLAX inserts with doors and drawers, and BRANÄS and KNIPSA baskets, all made for the cube. But the cube is a standard size now: Target, Walmart and Amazon sell 13 in fabric cubes, plastic bins and woven baskets that fit just as well, often in colours IKEA does not carry.
