The BILLY bookcase is shallow. That is what makes it fit in a hallway, and what makes most storage boxes stick out of it. Before buying anything, the number to know is the depth: 11 in (28 cm) for the shelf itself, about 10 ¼ in (26 cm) usable once you account for the back panel.
Shelf dimensions
- Width: the 31 ½ in (80 cm) BILLY has about 30 in (76 cm) of clear width per shelf; the narrow 15 ¾ in (40 cm) version has about 14 in (36 cm).
- Depth: 10 ¼ in (26 cm) usable. Boxes deeper than that overhang the front edge.
- Height: adjustable. The shelf pins are spaced about 1 ¼ in (3 cm) apart, and most people end up with 10 to 14 in (25 to 35 cm) between shelves.
What works on a shallow shelf
Magazine files, paper boxes, letter-size document boxes and shallow fabric bins were more or less designed for this depth. IKEA's own TJENA and KVARNVIK boxes come in BILLY-friendly sizes, and Target and Amazon sell 10 in deep bins in many colours.
The search below is set to a depth of at most 10 in and a height of at most 12 in. Measure the gap between your shelves and adjust the height slider to match.
